Named after Iyannough, a Native American who befriended early white settlers and was a chief of the Cummaquid tribe, the village of Hyannis is lovely, historic, and filled with fun things to do. Beautiful beaches offer hours of fun in the sun and water; green golf courses beckon golf enthusiasts; Main Street and South Street feature shops, cafes, taverns, and restaurants; and museums present a glimpse into the past. The former Hyannis Armory was the site of President-elect John F. Kennedy’s acceptance speech on November 9, 1960; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A memorial to President Kennedy was erected in 1966 on the Lewis Bay waterfront by the citizens of Barnstable. The memorial includes a fountain and a field-stone monument inscribed with a JFK quotation.
As the largest of the seven villages that make up the town of Barnstable, Hyannis is the transportation and commercial hub of Cape Cod and is known as the “Capital of the Cape.” Its large, natural harbor makes it the largest recreational boating area on the Cape and the second-largest commercial fishing port, second only to Provincetown. It also provides the primary ferry boat service and general aviation link for passengers and freight to popular Nantucket Island, and secondary ferry service to Martha’s Vineyard. The largest hospital on Cape Cod is located in Hyannis, as is the largest high school.
Visitors to Hyannis can enjoy such fun recreational activities as biking, tennis, boating, and golf, or they can just relax on a sandy beach with a good book. And at the end of the day, restaurants invite guests to dine on fresh, local seafood. When you have the chance, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the quaint village of Hyannis.
