Find GRR hotels. Ground was broken for Grand Rapids’ first airport – Kent County Airport -- in 1919, four miles (6.4 km) south of downtown. This was eight years after residents had witnessed the first airplane landing in the area – a Wright biplane at Comstock Park State Fairgrounds in 1911. The first scheduled air service in the United States was between Grand Rapids and Dearborn on a Ford-Stout monoplane named Miss Grand Rapids, which started in 1926. Construction on the present airport began in 1959 in Cascade Township, several miles east of the original one. The new airport opened in 1963 and was renamed Kent County International Airport in 1977, with the opening of a U.S. Customs Bureau Office in the main terminal building. The airport was renamed again in 1999 in honor of Gerald R. Ford, the 40th Vice President and 38th President of the United States.
President Ford served West Michigan as a U.S. Congressman from 1949-1973 and was a long-time supporter of the airport.
