Located in the heart of Trenton, this popular attraction is the New Jersey State Capitol Building. Constructed in 1790, it’s the second-oldest state house in constant legislative use in the entire nation – only the Maryland State Capitol Building, located in Annapolis, is older. The building is currently home to offices for the Governor of New Jersey, several state government departments and the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey, along with both chambers of the New Jersey Legislature – the New Jersey General Assembly and the New Jersey Senate.
Guided tours are offered daily to the public, with the exception of state holidays. Groups of 10 or more must have prior reservations. Volunteer and staff guides will accompany you through the building, showcasing its rich art, architecture and history. You’ll also learn about the legislative practice and their representatives who work in the building. Typical tours feature the General Assembly and the Senate chamber galleries, the rotunda, the Governor’s Reception Office and a conference room. Tours are generally an hour long.
