TENNIS, TENNIS EVERYWHERE
Just south of the Citi Field baseball stadium, the 46.5-acre complex has a total of 33 courts, all using DecoTurf cushioned acrylic surface. It’s operated by the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) and is open to the public for play all year long—except for the two weeks in August and September when it hosts the U.S. Open. In 2006, the USTA National Tennis Center was rededicated—in honor of one of the all-time great tennis players—as the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The complex now includes the main court at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the multi-purpose tennis pavilion with 12 courts, classrooms, fitness facilities and pro shop, show courts called Court 17, the new Grandstand and additional features. Staying overnight at one of the hotels near the U.S. Open Tennis in Flushing, NY allows you to see everything the complex has to offer.
When the U.S. Open takes place, the complex is filled with thousands of visitors. The main tournament includes five event championships: singles (men’s and women’s), doubles (men’s and women’s) and mixed doubles. There are additional tournaments for senior, junior and wheelchair players.
For those attending the U.S. Open, the complex offers a wide variety of dining options—from full-service restaurants with al fresco dining to regional cuisine and specialty items at the U.S. Open Food Village, Grandstand Food Village and other nearby areas. Beginning with the opening-night ceremony, several musical performances take place throughout the two-week event as well.
The center is open seven days a week (except for the U.S. Open, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day) and open to the public for court rentals from 6:00 a.m. to midnight. Players can sign up for a variety of offerings: 10 and Under Tennis Programs, Junior Development (ages 11-17), Tennis Academy, Summer Junior Tennis Camps, Adult Tennis Programs and Field Trips.
