Hogansburg is in the town of Bombay, named after the birthplace of Michael Hogan’s wife. Although Hogan came from India, the area that became his namesake city was inhabited by the Mohawk community of Akwesasne. The Akwesasne Cultural Center has exhibits that present Mohawk culture from the perspective of the Mohawk people of Akwesasne with over 2,000 photographs and 700 various ethnographic objects.
You can see where these tribes once lived for yourself by visiting Adirondack Park, a New York Forest Preserve. This park encompasses much of the northeastern lobe of Upstate New York and is the largest park and the largest state-level protected area in the contiguous United States. It is also the largest national historic landmark. The park has two major museums, the Adirondack Museum, which has extensive collections from when the area was settled, and the Wild Center, dedicated to teaching visitors about the Adirondack natural surroundings. The city also borders more land once inhabited by tribes like the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. For more outdoor adventures, head to one of the many trails in surrounding cities, like the Appalachian Trail that runs through Glastenbury Mountain—or bike your way to the mountains.
