The longest active Thoroughbred racetrack in the country, the Saratoga Race Course reaches its peak with “America’s Mid-Summer Derby, also known as Travers Stakes—opening season starts in July. Nestled inside the Canfield Casino, a restored late 1800s gambling house on the National Register of Historic Places, the Saratoga Springs History Museum features three levels showcasing the museum’s artifacts. Each of the exhibits offers an aspect of local culture, as well as fine arts, fashion, home furnishings and gaming history.
The Saratoga Spa State Park is also on the National Register of Historic Places, demonstrating its historic role as a social scene and therapeutic destination in the 1800s. Its original feature is the all-natural springs that were believed to cure many sicknesses. If you only have time to visit one site, a popular destination for tourists is the Saratoga National Historical Park, a site that commemorates the Battle of Saratoga where the emerging U.S. fought for its first victory against the British army in 1777. This park comprises of three regions: the Schuyler House, the home of the American general who commanded the charge; the battlefield, offering trails to endless landmarks; and the Saratoga Monument, which marks the scene of the British surrender. The latter two sites are situated roughly 7 miles going north of the battlefield.
