Originally a settlement known as “Bradford’s Ordinary”, which was established in 1750, the community that was to become Cary was forever changed by the arrival of the railroad. Allison Francis "Frank" Page and his wife, Catherine "Kate" Raboteau Page, purchased 300 acres here in 1854 -- Page named his development in honor of Samuel Fenton Cary, a prohibitionist and congressman from Ohio whom he admired. Frank Page was a farmer and a lumberman, and his primary business was operating a sawmill. However, in addition to those occupations, he was also the town’s first developer, mayor, postmaster, and railroad agent! A hotel that he built in 1868 to serve railroad passengers became known as the Page-Walker Hotel; it is now an arts and history center on the Town Hall campus and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town was incorporated in 1871, several years after the North Carolina and Seaboard Railroads formed a junction here.
