Stay with Choice Hotels in Pinehurst, NC in “The Cradle of American Golf”
The village of Pinehurst is a National Historic Landmark. The village was born in 1885 as the brainchild of Boston resident James Walker Tufts. He wanted to build a health resort in the North Carolina Sandhills, and he recruited renowned architect Fredrick Law Olmstead to design the village (Olmstead also designed the gardens at the Biltmore Estate in Ashville and New York City’s Central Park). Pinehurst’s golfing legacy began in 1887 when Tufts added the first of eight golf courses to the Pinehurst Resort. Today, the North Carolina communities of Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen have more than 40 golf courses between them.
For those who want to experience the area’s natural beauty, a trip to Weymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve is a fun way to spend the day. The preserve features a 571-acre longleaf pine forest with hiking trails. It’s also a great place for birdwatchers to spot an endangered red-cockaded woodpecker! The Sandhills Horticultural Gardens allow visitors to view a variety of gardens and natural areas (including a wetland area). The gardens are located on the campus of Sandhills Community College, and they are open to the public daily from dawn to sunset. When staying at one of our Pinehurst hotels, you’ll also be close to other North Carolina destinations. Ceramics collectors may want to make the short drive to the city of Seagrove, which is known as the pottery capital of the U.S. You can also take a trip to Asheboro to visit the North Carolina Zoo. It’s the largest walk-through zoo in the world.
