The origins of the Smithfield community date back to 1759 when John Smith, one of the area’s earliest settlers, petitioned to operate a ferry where the Neuse River cut through his land; this site became known as Smith’s Ferry. In 1762, Smith’s son, John Smith, Jr., purchased 228 acres of his father’s tract, including the ferry, and in 1771, he and his wife built a home on a rise overlooking the ferry operations. They began to provide overnight accommodations for travellers in their home, and it eventually became a public house. Smith provided 100 acres for a town and 50 acres for a commons – those commons remain a public park today. Ten months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Town of Smithfield was officially chartered – the town came into being during the inaugural session of the General Assembly of the newly proclaimed State of North Carolina in 1777. Population growth was initially slow in Smithfield -- it remained at approximately 500 until long after the Civil War!
Visitors to Smithfield have their choice of many fun and interesting things to do and places to go. Important Civil War sites can be explored, including the Johnston County Courthouse, where General Sherman established his headquarters after the Union infantry occupied the town and Confederates withdrew; Sherman announced General Lee’s surrender from its steps. A very popular landmark in town is the museum dedicated to Smithfield’s most famous hometown girl, Hollywood legend Ava Gardner. Other attractions include Carolina Premium Outlets, the Frank Creech Art Gallery, theaters, boutiques, golf courses, and antique stores. Restaurants, cafes, and breweries welcome visitors inside to relax with a good meal, and the annual Smithfield Ham & Yam Festival is fun for all ages! When you have the chance, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the friendly town of Smithfield.
