Founded in 1810, Waynesville is located just outside the Pisgah National Forest, close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The town is made up of six unique neighborhoods: Downtown, home to a diverse array of shops, restaurants, art galleries and historic buildings; Frog Level, a historic district named for its frequent flooding; Hazelwood, which used to be a separate town but was annexed in 1995; Laurel Ridge, centered around a country club and golf course of the same name; West Waynesville, once the industrial section of town, now home to the Waynesville Commons shopping center; and Russ Avenue, a newer business district with retail, restaurants and more. In addition to annual events such as the Smoky Mountain Folk Festival and the Apple Harvest Festival, Waynesville hosts Folkmoot USA—which is North Carolina’s official international music and dance festival. First held in 1984, the festival today hosts 200-plus folk groups from more than 100 different countries.
