The name Alliance partly references the joining of the three communities (a fourth, Mount Union was added in 1888) and partly as a nod to the two major railroad lines (the Cleveland and Wellsville Railroad and the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad) that intersect in town. Alliance was incorporated as a city in 1889. You can take in Alliance’s social, industrial and railroad history with the restored Glamorgan Castle (previous home of the owner of Morgan Engineering), the Haines House, a restored underground railroad home and the Mabel Hartzell historic home. Alliance is a town where its Main Street was originally laid out to bring traffic to the train station, where raw materials were procured for factories and finished goods were sent out. Today the renovated store fronts house art galleries, restaurants, antique shops and performance spaces.
One unique music venue is Jupiter Studios, which also provides local cuisine and is located in a restored 1925 Art Deco-styled building. The historic downtown has a Saturday Farmers' Market on Main Street near the historic Caboose that gives a sense of what downtown’s Main Street shopping was once like. Alliance is also the home to The Cat Fanciers' Association and the subsequent Feline Historical Museum, the first of its kind of the United States. If you’re traveling with your family and looking for a place to picnic and enjoy the great outdoors, you can visit Silver Park, which also has a pond where you can feed the ducks, and ice skating in the winter. Beech Creek Botanical Garden has a butterfly house with native butterflies in all stages of development, from egg to larva to pupa to adult. The Garden also has unusual plants for sale.
