The Zoological Society of Cincinnati was founded in 1873 on 65 acres in the middle of the city and officially opened its doors in 1875, making this zoo the second-oldest one in the United States. The number of animals originally living at the zoo was quite small, consisting of only an alligator, a tiger, a circus elephant, a buffalo, a hyena, two elk, two grizzly bears, three deer, six raccoons, eight monkeys, and over 400 birds, including a talking crow!
Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1987, the zoo is proud to claim the oldest zoo building in the country – the Reptile House. Today the zoo boasts one of the largest animal and plant collections in the country, with more than 500 animal and 3,000 plant species. Animal residents include all kinds of mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. Having long been successful at captive breeding, the zoo started with sea lions and trumpeter swans back in the 1880s. To support that tradition, The Lindner Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) was founded in 1986. There are many more fun and interesting things to do at this zoo in addition to viewing animals – there are animal shows, animal keeper chats, animal interactions, lecture series, festivals, celebrations, and educational programs.
As you explore the zoo, you are surrounded by an outstanding plant collection and a unique blend of gardens and landscapes. This zoo has been rated by peer zoological parks as one of the best in the nation, and it continues to set the standard for conservation, education and preservation of wild animals and spaces.
