The original inhabitants of this part of the fertile Willamette Valley were the Kalapuya, a Native American tribe, and they called this area Tekenah, a word describing the deep pool where the Calapooia River meets the Willamette River. Brothers Walter and Thomas Monteith settled in the area in 1847 after traveling by ox team over the Oregon Trail from their native state of New York, and they named the city after their hometown. Incorporated in 1864, the city is the county seat of Linn County. The arrival of the first train in 1871 was celebrated as the greatest event in Albany's history. Albany businessmen raised $50,000 to ensure that the rails would be built through the city instead of bypassing it a few miles eastward.
