Two famous Pennsylvanians have connections to Bensalem. The name itself is a tribute to state namesake William Penn by settler Joseph Growden, who named his estate “Manor of Bensalem”—or “son of peace.” In addition, the legendary Benjamin Franklin often traveled to Bensalem to visit his friend Joseph Galloway; some believe that Franklin conducted his famous “kite-flying” experiment at Galloway’s mansion.
