First settled in the late 1700s, Monroeville was once just a small village nestled among widely scattered farms. But with the completion of the Northern Turnpike in 1807, this community became the first stagecoach stop heading east from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, and growth soon followed. Local farmer Joel Monroe began selling off lots of land along the road; the town was eventually named in his honor. The village became part of the newly formed Patton Township in 1849, and became the borough of Monroeville in 1951. When the town was designated as the Pittsburgh interchange for the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a group of farsighted businessmen built The Miracle Mile, a major shopping center that was the largest of its kind between New York and Chicago at the time!
