Start by visiting the Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve. Home to the Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, it offers 110 acres of greenery, complete with hiking trails, an information center and the Frank Allen Turner Amphitheater. The 696-acre Chewacla State Park is another great outdoor destination with a swimming lake, hiking trails, picnic spots and camping areas. The bike- and dog-friendly trails also offer interpretative displays. You will also want to visit the Donald E. Davis Arboretum for a quiet stroll among trees that are native to Alabama. The Arboretum is also a good place to see native reptiles and amphibians—such as red-eared pond slider turtles and river cooters—that call the area home.
The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is home to an impressive collection of 19th and 20th century art, including works by Georgia O'Keeffe, John James Audubon, Joan Miró and Henri Matisse. Take in a musical or play at the Telfair Peet Theatre, which is run by the Department of Theatre at Auburn University. The theatre offers an eclectic mix of productions, including comedies and dance.
