When you arrive in Michigan, the sounds of nature will call and the best place to start your Manistique adventure is at Palms Book State Park. Visible from this park is the Kitch-iti-kipi, or the Big Spring. This spring is the largest in Michigan and is 40 feet deep with over 10,000 gallons of clear water flowing per minute from the underlying limestone. Hop on a large raft to view the inhabitants of this giant spring! Indian Lake State Park is also home to a large body of water, the Indian Lake, which is the fourth-largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula. Native Americans who inhabited the lake’s surrounding area used to call it M’O’Nistique Lake, a name which has lent itself to the city’s name!
Near Indian Lake is the Original Indian Lake mission known as Bishop Baraga Shrine. This Shrine includes a chapel, American Indian dwellings and buildings, all of which you can tour. After an exciting first day, wake up the next morning with an early walk on the boardwalk on Lake Michigan or take an afternoon walk and a picnic in the park. You’ll see the Manistique Lighthouse from here as you stroll along the lake.
