The university has almost 50,000 students system-wide, and it offers 350-plus programs at more than a dozen degree-granting colleges and schools. Many of its programs have earned “#1 status” including the Undergraduate International Business Major, International MBA, Nursing Online Graduate Programs, Ph.D. Program in Exercise Science, and its Public University Honors College.
Much of the downtown campus–which is not far from the South Carolina State House—is centered around The Horseshoe, a group of buildings in a U-shape that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many buildings reflect the federal style of architecture that was popular in America’s early days, including the South Caroliniana Library, the first freestanding library in the United States. Some of the other campus sites of interest include the Koger Center for the Arts, Longstreet Theatre, McKissick Museum, Education Museum, and the W. Gordon Belser Arboretum. There are plenty of recreational activities available at Lake Murray and the three rivers (Saluda, Broad and Congaree) around Columbia, and coastal cities such as Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head are within a two-hour drive to the beaches. South Carolina fields 19 varsity sports teams in the Southeastern Conference (except men’s soccer and women’s sand volleyball).
