Addison is located in an area of northern Dallas once called Peters Colony. It was settled as early as 1846 when Preston Witt built a house on White Rock Creek. The area was not known as Addison until 1902 when it was named after Addison Robertson, who served as the community's second postmaster. The town’s first industry was a cotton gin, which was built in 1902 by the Pistole brothers. A relatively young town which incorporated in 1953, Addison experienced explosive growth that carried over to today, when the business and daytime population typically reaches up to 100,000 a day, even though the number of residents in Addison is only slightly more than 13,000. Addison constructed its first town park in 1978 and put into action a massive beautification campaign two years later. Addison now boasts 118 acres of beautifully landscaped and uniquely themed parks. Esplanade Park is a particular picture perfect place to have an afternoon picnic or enjoy some live jazz concerts in the summer months.
Not surprising for a city that is the third-largest general aviation airport in the nation, Addison is home to The Cavanaugh Flight Museum, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting aviation studies and to preserving America's aviation heritage and its collection of vintage aircrafts. You can see some "old warbirds" that have been kept in flying condition and make appearances at special occasions. Take in local community theater at the WaterTower Theatre which puts on high-production musicals, plays and even brings in big-name Broadway stars for private concerts. Addison shopping is available on a large scale at The Galleria Mall, a huge center full of big names stores. There is an ice rink on the lower ground floor and a five screen movie theater as well. When dining out, Addison has more than 170 restaurants for you to choose from. Then consider this statistic -- Addison has enough eateries that every resident in the town could go out to eat and be seated at the same time!
