The building of a cabin court house was the structural founding of Granbury in 1887. Today, the building is surrounded by buildings that are now historic landmarks. In fact, 26 structures and two trees have been designated as Granbury historic landmarks to preserve Granbury’s rich history. Although many of the landmarks are homes, other landmarks like the Granbury Light Plant, Granbury Railroad Depot, Old Granbury Hospital and the Granbury Opera House are also beautiful reminders of the City’s past. Some notable residents have also lived in Granbury. Granbury is a city in Hood County, the home county of Davy Crockett and his wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth is now buried in Acton State Historic Site where a large statue of her marks her grave. It is also believed that John Wilkes Booth assumed the name of John St. Helen and resided in Hood County.
Another notable event in Granbury’s history was the damming of the Brazos River in 1969. This formed Lake Granbury, a narrow lake that flows through the city.
