The city of Longview was founded in April of 1870, when farmer Ossamus Hitch Methvin, Sr. persuaded the Southern Pacific Railroad to construct their rail line in the direction of his land, as he knew it would increase his property’s value. He sold 100 of his acres to the railroad for only one dollar and then an additional 100 acres to them later that year for $500 in gold. The railroad laid out a town on the land they purchased from Methvin and named it after the impressive vista from his house atop Rock Hill. The town was incorporated on May 17, 1871 and is the county seat of Gregg County.
