Open 365 days a year, rain or shine, the zoological park was once just a collection of animals in San Pedro Park. The park turned into a proper zoo in 1914 with the addition of buffalo, elk, deer, monkeys, a pair of lions and four bears. 34 years later in 1948, the Richard Friedrich Aquarium opened and was described as, “the world’s greatest,” at the time. In 1966, the zoo opened a simulated tropical rain forest with free-flying birds known as the Hixon Bird House. The zoo’s bird collection is now one of the world’s largest. The fun-filled park is home to more than 9,000 animals representing 750 species of animals on 56 acres. Every month, the zoo hosts opportunities for you to learn about animals, the earth and more. After you’ve enjoyed the sights and sounds of the zoo, head about three miles to San Antonio’s famed River Walk.
