The Aquarium opened on May 20, 1977, and has been educating and delighting its visitors ever since! Initially owned and operated by the City of Seattle’s Department of Parks and Recreation, it has been managed by a nonprofit organization since July 1, 2010. Promoting marine conservation is a primary focus of the Aquarium, and it instructs the public about their impact on marine life. Species collections are featured within six major exhibits: Window on Washington Waters, Life on the Edge, Pacific Coral Reef, Puget Sound Fish and Dome Room, Puget Sound Orcas Family Activity Center and Marine Mammals. Aquarium biologists conduct critical research on a variety of Puget Sound species, including Giant Pacific Octopus, Bluntnose Sixgill Sharks and Northern Sea Otters, all in an effort to contribute to the health of the local marine environment and its inhabitants.
In partnership with the University of Washington and funded by the National Science Foundation, the Aquarium is one of 12 Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence. The center builds an ocean-learning community of scientists, marine volunteers, educators and interested citizens. Through its exhibits, programs, talks and shows, you and your whole family will be fascinated by the beautiful and intriguing sea creatures at this fine aquarium!
