The city was incorporated in 1890 and named after Stephen Benton Elkins, a U.S. senator and businessman from West Virginia, who designed the city alongside U.S. senator and businessman Henry Gassaway Davis. They built Elkins into a railroad community to help export lumber and coal from the area. The railroad gave a big boost to the local economy, and many people traveled to the city to open shops and businesses. A fire in 1897 devastated the downtown district, but the community rebuilt the area by replacing the ruined wooden buildings with brick and stone structures. Following the rebuilding period, the city continued to grow. It was named the county seat of Randolph County and became a hub for commerce and culture. Stroll through the Downtown Historic District to see many of the original buildings that were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You can also visit the beautiful campus of Davis & Elkins College, which was founded 14 years after the community’s incorporation.
