The zoo was founded in 1882. At the time, it was a miniature mammal and bird display located in the area that is now Washington Park. As the display’s popularity grew, the attraction expanded and added more animals. By the early 1900s, the zoo had grown to include more than 800 animals on 23 acres. Over the past 100+ years, the zoo has continued to expand. Today, it sits on 200 wooded acres bordered by Highway 45, Highway 100, Interstate 94 and Bluemound Road. See primates, big cats, birds and other animals; and in addition to viewing the animals, you can enjoy shows and activities like the Birds of Prey Show, Animals in Action, the Zoo Mobile, the Seal/Sea Lion Show and Animal Rides.
Those who are up for an adventure van take a zip line ride and get a birds-eye view of the zoo! If you get hungry, you can grab a bite to eat at the Flamingo Lake Café, the gift shop or one of the concession areas (concession areas are open during the spring and summer months). When planning your trip to Milwaukee, make sure to set aside some time to visit the Milwaukee County Zoo.
