Things to Do in Mobile

Military buffs, party people and foodies: get to Mobile, Alabama. This Gulf Coast city is warm, welcoming and just the tiniest bit wild.

It's also a city that celebrates its heritage, from the lovely 19th-century architecture to the long-lasting Mardi Gras celebrations that take place each year. And in Mobile, some of the best food is served on paper plates or in rundown old shacks. When food is this fresh and flavorful, it doesn't need to be dressed up.

Behold the "Mighty A"

If ships could talk, the USS Alabama would have unbelievable stories to tell. This massive battleship was commissioned in 1942 and sailed for 37 months of active duty during World War II, before being permanently docked in Mobile in 1965. Today you can tour the ship and the USS Drum submarine any day of the year except Christmas. There aren't any guided tours, but you can download the attraction's app and follow the tour it lays out. Be sure to spend a few quiet moments taking in the memorials to fallen soldiers.

Make It a Museum Day

Mobile has at least 10 museums, so even the pickiest members of your group should be able to find one that interests them. Go back in time at the Richards Daughters of the American Revolution House Museum, a stately mansion built in 1860 and decorated with pieces from that era. Southern hospitality is in full force here; visitors are served tea and cookies. Take antsy little ones to the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. With its 150 interactive exhibits and IMAX theater, you can easily pass half a day experiencing hands-on family fun.

Feel Festive

New Orleans gets all the Mardi Gras hype, but the people of Mobile swear the first celebration was held in their hometown. History aside, Mobile still celebrates Mardi Gras by going all out. If you're in town during the two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday, plan to catch a parade rolling through town each day during this period. The city also hosts BayFest, an annual music festival, in autumn. Come summer, make the 25-mile drive to Grand Bay where an annual watermelon festival takes place. Smaller festivals run on weekends throughout the year in Mobile.
