Found on Humboldt Bay, Eureka includes an arts community that has made the city the number 1 spot in “The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America” and some of the nation’s largest trees. And when booking a room at one of the Choice Hotels in Eureka, you can feel at home in relaxing rooms with a wide variety of amenities.
Humboldt Bay, which is California’s second-largest bay, is what first led settlers to this city. The bay includes a boat launch, an assortment of wildlife and a museum, and it still remains as a major attraction. A 75-minute cruise excursion is offered on the Madaket – the oldest boat in operation in the country. The Bay is known for being the state’s only open-ocean boat launch – and is a favored among fisherman who like hunting crabs, perch, bat rays, jacksmelt, clams, native halibut, leopard sharks and salmon. The city boasts an art walk centered near F and 2nd streets every first Saturday of the month. The walk offers local artwork from roughly 80 venues and performances by poets, street entertainers and musicians.
History of Eureka is so well-kept in the “Old Town” neighborhood that the city has been declared officially as the 477th California Historical Landmark. The region comprises of 154 Victorian-era structures. From the east end rests Carson Mansion, which is an excellent design of Queen Anne Style architecture, constructed in 1884. There are many other architecturally rich buildings to look out for too!
Make sure to save time for the great outdoors! At Humboldt State Park, you can camp and hike among lavish Redwood groves, and possibly get the rare opportunity of viewing one of the area’s six albino redwoods – only 50 have been known to exist. The 30-mile Avenue of Giants on Highway 101 cuts through the park, giving spectators a glimpse of the enormous trees. Sequoia Park Zoo is the only recognized zoological facility between Oregon and the San Francisco Bay Area and is a must-do attraction, as well!
