Battery Park is a simple, back-to-basics park encouraging a slower pace for part of your vacation. Here you can stroll by the river, watch the geese, bring a picnic and enjoy your family. Craft and other events are often here.Once refreshed, take a tour of the New Castle Court House where Delaware signed the Declaration of Independence—back when New Castle was the state capital. Make sure you visit the second floor rooms to check out the information on the Abolitionist movement in Delaware. While you are perusing Delaware history, the Old Dutch House should be on your itinerary. It is one of the oldest homes in the town; you will note as you walk in that the front entryway dips down from the street; the house was built when the streets were made of dirt. Once bricks were added, the street level rose above that of the house doorway. Not just for books, the Old Library Museum has rotating exhibits on the ground floor illustrating New Castle’s history. The octagonal building on the edge of the New Castle Green still has the original books on the top floor. After all that history, you are probably eager to get moving, and you can do so at the Bowlerama, which dates from the 1960s and has been in continuous operation ever since. The new name is Synthetic, but it has not caught on. Sixty-two lanes ensure there will be space here for the whole family. No vacation is complete without a little shopping, and the New Castle Farmer’s Market is a bargain-hunter’s mecca with full-time vendors inside and folks offering yard-sale specials outside.
