Four Seasons
Evansville's summer weather is hot, hot, hot, with average daily highs in the low 90s. The city’s temperate winter sees highs in the mid-40s, with an average of 13 inches of snow. The leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red on cool autumn days, when temperatures tend to be in the 50s and 60s. Spring is a bit cooler, with temps in the 40s and 50s. Rain is common throughout the year, so pack an umbrella and light jacket.
Great Outdoors
Evansville offers a huge range of outdoor activities. Wander the 6 miles of peaceful wooded trails at the Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, where you’ll see magnificent, 300 year-old-trees soaring over 100 feet tall and spot mammals such as raccoons, white tail deer and the occasional fox or coyote—from a safe distance. Make a splash at the Burdette Park Aquatic Center, where you and the kids can dive into the Olympic size pool or frolic around the children’s area spray park, or play the links at one of more than a dozen area golf courses. Head indoors to watch a planetarium show at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science, and don't miss a visit to the Reitz Home Museum, especially if you're in town around Christmas, when this stately old home is beautifully decorated. Both sports and film fans will enjoy taking in a baseball game at Bosse Field: many scenes from A League of Their Own were filmed at this stadium, home of the Evansville Otters.
Area Industries
Evansville's industry looks a lot like that of other mid-size cities—the largest employers are hospitals and schools. In addition to the local school district, the University of Southern Indiana and University of Evansville both employ thousands of people. Manufacturing and construction are also big contributors to the area economy.
Getting Around
After you've sailed through the Evansville Regional Airport, you'll never want to deal with the crowds at larger airports again. This small airport makes it a breeze to travel through, and with its major airlines—United, Delta and American—you'll have no problem finding flights to accommodate your schedule. Amtrak and Greyhound have stations in Evansville, too. Plan to get around town by car or public bus.
