Get to Know Lincoln

Prep for Your Lincoln Visit
Home of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska State Capitol, Lincoln is a dose of culture and social fun that you and your family can enjoy. Whether traveling here to visit a historical landmark, see a Cornhusker game or catch the legislature in action, you’re guaranteed to find a relaxing getaway far from the energetic pace of big-city living.

Midwest Weather

Lincoln rarely gets any warmer than 90 degrees during the summer months, which provides the perfect climate for exploring its wonderful outdoor attractions. Summers can be humid, however, so bring plenty of water to rehydrate if you're headed outdoors. Enjoy evenings outside with temperatures in the mid-60s until September. During the colder season, you can expect plenty of snow—about 26 inches—with temperatures as low as 14 degrees at night and daytime averages hovering in the mid-30s.

What to See and Do

While in Lincoln, you can’t miss the Nebraska State Capitol building. Head up to the Memorial Chamber on the 14th floor and get a view of the city towering more than 240 feet in the air. Take one of the guided tours to get the most out of your experience. If you want to tour the city in a unique way, check out Group Therapy Bike Tours, where you’ll coast around the city on a 15-seat pedal bike modified to function as a trolley. Choose from tours with specific routes or, if you're feeling adventurous, one with no set destination.

Popular Industries

Lincoln's steadily expanding economy is rated as having the best work environment in the entire country. While the state government and the University of Nebraska make up about a quarter of the city’s economy, you'll also find Ameritas Life Insurance Company among the city's top five employers. Smaller businesses are also alive and well in Lincoln—around 90 percent of its employers have 20 or fewer workers. On the outskirts of town, Midwest staples of farming and livestock are big business.

Lincoln Transportation

You can get to Lincoln by plane, train or bus. When arriving by air, you’ll fly into the Lincoln Municipal Airport, located in the heart of the city. If going green is your thing, hop aboard one of the new buses or trolleys, which run on compressed natural gas. There are also several places throughout Lincoln where you can rent a bike.
