Climate Standards and Surprises
Alexandria is no stranger to having unpredictable seasons. It has everything from sticky summers to sporadic blizzards. During summer months, keep an umbrella handy and be prepared for the occasional afternoon thunderstorm, or embrace the unknown during the winter season while snowfall can range from a light dusting to a blizzard.
Something Old
Head to Old Town to take a trip back in time, where over 200-year-old town houses line the brick sidewalks. Put on your walking shoes and check out King Street—the heart of Old Town—to wander the cobblestone streets and choose from a variety of eclectic shops and acclaimed restaurants. Stop in at the Torpedo Factory Art Center to witness where weapons were made during World War II and even see some historical creations on display. Or learn all about what life was life for pre-Revolutionary War families at the Carlyle House.
What Makes D.C. Tick
While a number of Alexandria’s locals work non-governmental jobs, the city is best known for being a political machine with public relations and lobbyist firms geared towards politics. Tourism also plays a major role, generating major revenue for the city.
A Commuting Capital
The Jefferson Davis Highway—a portion of U.S. Highway 1— runs through Alexandria and can get congested depending on the time of day. The same goes for Interstate 395 and 495, which run through town so be weary when making plans. Take the Metro subway system to D.C. and beyond, or keep it simple and hop aboard the Virginia Railway Express.
