Things to do in Ballina

 

Ballina offers the whole coastal experience. With uncrowded beaches, world-class surf and waterside restaurants, cafes and breweries - as well as lush rainforests and quaint hinterland towns - this is the perfect spot for a chilled getaway. Only 25 minutes from Byron Bay, where the Richmond River meets the Pacific, you’ll find plenty of amazing things to do in Ballina. It’s also where you’ll also find the famous Big Prawn - a quirky nod to quintessential Australiana.

 

Shelly Beach

With 32 kilometers of golden beaches, Shelly Beach offers one the region’s best family-friendly patrolled beaches throughout the spring, summer and autumn holidays - as well as world-class surf breaks. There are plenty of rockpools to explore at the southern end - a great place for kids to explore. North of the rockpools you’ll find the well-known surf beach. Shelly Beach Café and Belle General are within walking distance if you are looking for a cold drink, a bite to eat or delicious coffee.

 
 

Ballina Headland and Lighthouse

Overlooking the sweeping coastline, Ballina Lighthouse is an historic landmark of history and natural beauty. Situated above Shelly Beach and Lighthouse Beach, this is the perfect spot for breathtaking views and whale watching during migration season - or simply enjoying a stunning sunrise. The Big Prawn

Looking for an iconic Aussie experience? You can’t visit town and not see the Big Prawn - definitely one of the best free things to do in Ballina! Standing nine metres tall and weighing in at 35 tonnes, the Big Prawn has been one of Australia’s famous ‘Big Things’ attractions since 1989. Snap a photo before enjoying some seafood at one of the stores on the opposite side of the road. If you’re in Ballina in November be sure to go to The Prawn Festival, where you can savour sizzling prawns and soak up some great music.

 
 

Ballina Naval & Maritime Museum

Originally opening in the Old Pilot’s Cottage, the Ballina Naval & Maritime Museum has grown to become a trove of exhibits, curios and artifacts - including the remaining raft of the famed Las Balsas Expedition of 1973. Explore a collection that includes an original dugout canoe, WW2 maps and detailed models. You’ll also see plenty of items recovered from local shipwrecks - Ballina’s fascinating maritime stories will enthral young and old. 

 

Aboriginal Cultural Ways

Running along the Coastal Recreational Path between Ballina to Lennox Headland, the Aboriginal Cultural Ways trail takes in 22 panels of information on the sites, stories and memories of indigenous significance that are part of the region’s rich landscape and heritage. Take a deeper look and gain an understanding of this place and its Aboriginal community and history as you explore Ballina’s beautiful coastline and feel a greater connection to it. 

 

North Wall Walk

Heading out along the break wall, the North Wall Walk will invigorate the senses with the ocean breeze of Shaws Bay on one side and the Richmond River on the other. The full length of the wall begins at Brighton Street, heading out along the breakwall and taking in the surrounding bays and rock pools. You can also enjoy a shorter walk from the Coast Guard tower and just to the end of the wall. Look out for  dolphins or watch the surfers from Lighthouse Beach. 

 
 

Killen Falls

A hidden gem, the cascading Killen Falls offers a slice of tranquility in the lush hinterland of Ballina. Only a short drive from town, stroll along the Killen Falls Trails viewing platform, which is a 660-metre return walk, and take in the picturesque falls and rock pool. The base of the falls is a 1km return walk from the car park area (with some steep sections). Surrounded by ancient rainforest, this serene location will reinvigorate the soul.

Located on the gorgeous Richmond River, the Wharf Bar & Restaurant is the place to enjoy a memorable dining experience with stunning views. Seven Mile Brewing Co

Blow the froth off a cold one at the Seven Mile Brewing Co. This family owned favourite has a range of beers, including new seasonal releases served up every couple of months. Take a tour and enjoy a sip of a Lennox Lager, Cali Cream or West Coast IPA. This local establishment also hosts a range of food nights, from American styled BBQ evenings to German feasts and Chinese fusion dinners.

For a full-bodied brew with brunch and a chilled spot to watch local life go by, Cafe Boker is a local fave. Serving Little Marionette coffee, you can also choose from a wide range of tasty dishes including salami omelette and falafel. There are also plenty of vegan and vegetarian options to tuck into. 

Belle General also combines a cozy atmosphere with a diverse menu. Take a sip of the aromatic coffee and start the day with one of Belle’s hearty breakfast options such as the Green Bowl (with poached egg, roast pumpkin and sauteed greens), the Big Breakfast (with eggs, bacon and hash browns) or the Breakfast Tacos.

For an outing packed with vivid and contemporary artwork, the Northern Rivers Community Gallery has plenty to enjoy. With four large exhibition spaces, this significant regional creative hub rotates its exhibitions every eight weeks to showcase a huge range of work, with exhibits including local indigenous art and photography. There are also year-round community projects which encompass studios, residencies and other events. 


Ballina Bike Paths

Ballina’s waterways are lined with kilometres of mostly flat bike paths offering views of the local river, ocean and creek. You’ll find plenty of cafés to stop at along the way, including an ice cream shop, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a few dolphins too. Be sure to pick up a map when you hire your bike so you can plan your ride.
