Hauraki Gulf

Stretching from Auckland's coast, Hauraki Gulf is a beautiful expanse that is home to a huge number of fish including snapper, kingfish and trevally. You’ll find charter boat operators who cater for deep-sea fishing tours around the islands that dot the area. There are plenty of large snapper to be found on the northern side of the gulf, and the Rangitoto Channel is another one of the best places to fish in the Hauraki Gulf - and is also close to the city.

You’ll also find plenty of other ways to enjoy Auckland’s surrounding coastal beauty. Grab a paddle and embark on a coastal kayaking experience by hiring from one of the local operators - the perfect way to spend the day exploring secluded beaches and spotting dolphins and seals. Island hopping by ferry or tour boat is another popular way to explore the area.

Waitemata Harbour

Another one of the best fishing spots in Auckland, Waitemata Harbour offers excellent opportunities to catch kahawai salmon and snapper. Cool off at the end of the day with a beer or other beverage at Princes Wharf, where you can relax and look over Waitemata Harbour. For an even better view of the harbour and surrounding islands, the iconic Sky Tower takes 186 metres above the city and is home to the Orbit 360 restaurant.
