Prep for Your Aurora Visit
The town offers a fun-filled mixture of scenery, outdoor recreation and big-city access that’s perfect for connecting with family and friends. For more information about the “Gateway to the Rockies,” keep reading.

Outdoor Fun Year-Round

Aurora's earned its reputation as an active and healthy city by encouraging outdoor fun. Swim or Jet Ski at Cherry Creek State Park or pedal the 20-mile bike trail around the lake, watching for deer and meadowlarks. Throw some hamburgers on the grill at the picnic area of the Aurora Reservoir, then kayak or swim in its clear water. Perfect your swing on Aurora's nine golf courses or bet on the ponies at Arapahoe Park. Catch a live concert at Red Rocks—renowned as one of the most beautiful amphitheaters in the world. Everywhere you look, there's another opportunity to get out and get moving.

Seasons in the Sun

While it snows in the city, the average daytime temperature during the winter is a high of 45 degrees. During the summer months, the days are usually warm, with average high temps in the mid-80s. Summer nights are typically cool, with temperatures dipping down into the 60s. In general, the climate is dry, with low humidity. But whatever the season, it’s always best to check the weather forecast before packing for your getaway.

Air Force, Hospitals and Schools

As one of the nation’s healthiest cities, it's no surprise that the biggest employers in Aurora include Anschutz Medical Campus and various health care facilities throughout the region. The Buckley Air Force Base also provides a large number of jobs in Aurora, as do the town's aerospace industries and bioscience firms. Almost a third of Aurora workers are involved in sales and administration, while about half that number deal in business and finance.

Moving Around Aurora

When you fly into Aurora, you'll land at the Denver International Airport (which is actually closer to Aurora than to Denver itself). Driving into town isn't hard, since several highways come close to Aurora, including Interstate 70 and Interstate 225. Bring your own ride or rent a car for getting around the area, since public transit isn’t available in some parts of the city. In fact, only 6 percent of commuters take public transportation here.
