Road Trip Itinerary
Kick things off with coffee and breakfast tacos at Radio Coffee & Beer in South Austin, home to Veracruz tacos and a shady yard circled by food trucks. Head west on US-290 toward Dripping Springs, where the suburbs shift into low hills and roadside wineries. With advance reservations, plan a detour onto Hamilton Pool Road for Hamilton Pool Preserve, a collapsed limestone grotto with a 50-foot waterfall and short trails that showcase classic Hill Country geology. Return to the highway and continue southwest to Blanco. Step out and stretch in Blanco State Park where the river is lined with picnic tables, shade trees, and easy access for wading or a quick swim on hot days.
Pit Stop Alert:
Black Spur Coffee Shop & Emporium (Johnson City, TX)
Black Spur Coffee Shop & Emporium is half caffeine stop, half treasure hunt located right on US-290 in the heart of Johnson City. Order your favorite coffee drink at the front counter, then browse through colorful Mexican pottery, metal yard art, home decor, jewelry, and Hill Country knickknacks. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs, fuel up on a little caffeine, and come away with something fun.
- Best Bites: Hot coffee and house-baked cookies really hit the spot.
- Souvenir Pick: Anything that fits in the car—from a small piece of hand-painted pottery to a quirky metal yard critter.
- Time: 30–45 minutes for coffee, a bathroom break, and a wander through the emporium aisles.
From Blanco, drive north on US-281 to Johnson City, where you can tour former President Johnson’s boyhood home and nearby LBJ National Historical Park sites or just stroll and window shop in the compact downtown. If you need a break, Pecan Street Brewing on the square offers house-brewed beer and comfort food. Then turn west on US-290 and roll onto the famed 290 Wine Trail.
In Fredericksburg, park near old Main Street and explore German-rooted downtown biergartens, bakeries, boutiques, and tasting rooms all within a few walkable blocks. For a must-sip-stop, head to Grape Creek Vineyards just east of town to experience a Tuscan-inspired estate with highly rated wines and gorgeous views over the vines. Back in town, don’t miss Fredericksburg Pie Company (open limited days and hours) for a slice of scratch-made pie. Before you call it a night, take a slow stroll along Main Street and duck into Altdorf Biergarten for classic German beer and bites.
On day two, start with an unforgettable sunrise hike at Enchanted Rock. Or linger and vibe over coffee at Kaffee Haus, followed by a short stroll downtown. If you’re visiting during wildflower season, head to Wild Seed Farms. It features a half-mile walking trail that meanders through the flowers, as well as a vineyard and large market center. If you’d rather keep the return more relaxed than rugged, turn US-290 into a Hill Country wine day with a tasting stop at Becker Vineyards, Signor Vineyards, or any of the other estate wineries between Fredericksburg and Johnson City.
Back in Austin, keep the evening going with an elevated dinner at Mattie’s, where the oak-shaded grounds of Green Pastures and polished Southern menu make for a memorable finish. Then cap the night with live music on South Congress or a sunset stroll along the river-like Lady Bird Lake.
Side Trip Spotlight:
Pedernales Falls State Park (Johnson City, TX)
On your second day, make the drive back to Austin part of the adventure with a stop at Pedernales Falls State Park. After breakfast in Fredericksburg, head east on US-290 toward Johnson City, then follow the open route (based on season) south into the park. Witness the rushing Pedernales River run over wide, terraced slabs of limestone to create picture-perfect cascades and pools framed by scrubby hills and big, open skies.
- Trip Time: About 3–4 hours total from Fredericksburg, including drive time, overlooks, and a short hike or two.
- How to Get There: From Fredericksburg, drive east on US-290 toward Johnson City. Before town, follow signs for Pedernales Falls State Park via FM-3232 or FM-2766 (routes vary by season). After your visit, hop back to US-290 East for a straight shot back to Austin.
- Best Time to Visit: Late morning or mid-afternoon; spring and fall are particularly nice.
- Why It’s Worth It: Stopping at Pedernales Falls turns your return journey into a finale instead of just a commute back to Austin. It’s also the perfect centerpiece for day two if you’d rather skip the wineries.
Your Return Trip
From Fredericksburg, follow US-290 east back toward Austin for an easy return through the heart of Texas Hill Country, with the option to slow the drive with more wine tastings or a waterfall detour. The full trip back typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours without stops, making it easy to turn the return into either a scenic finale or a straight shot back to the city.
