ROOT, ROOT, ROOT FOR THE DOME TEAM
Originally known as the Florida Suncoast Dome (until 1993) and the Thunderdome (1993-1996), Tropicana Field has a capacity of up to 42,755 people, including tarp-covered, obstructed-view seats. The fixed permanent dome was a “must” for any Tampa-area team—due to the hot, humid summer temperatures and frequent thunderstorms—and is currently the only non-retractable dome in pro baseball. Its recognizable slanted roof was designed on an angle to reduce interior volume and cooling costs, while also providing better protection against hurricanes.
Tropicana Field has also been used for college football, hosting bowl games and other competitions. If you’re planning on showing your team spirit at one of the games, be sure to book a stay at one of the Tropicana Field hotels.
The stadium also houses the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame. Moved to the facility in 2007, it includes displays and memorabilia dedicated to the baseball legend (who grew up in the area) and many other greats of the game.
Located next to Booker Creek, Tropicana Field is close to a variety of attractions. Art enthusiasts can see the Chihuly Collection at the Morean Arts Center, or visit the nearby Dali Museum and Museum of Fine Arts. Downtown St. Petersburg is also home to Al Lang Stadium—home of the Tampa Bay soccer team—as well as the Jannus Live outdoor concert venue and the Mahaffey Theater, a bayside venue for performing arts.
