Get to Know Cedar Falls

Prep for Your Cedar Falls Visit
Tucked between rolling farmland and the Waterloo metro area, Cedar Falls is a transition point between rural and city living. The tidy, red-brick downtown hearkens back to its 19th century beginnings when settlers fell in love with the forested areas along the river. Expansive natural areas along the Cedar River beckon you to explore nearly 100 miles of land and water trails to discover the beauty that inspired people to anchor their lives along its shores. Pack your water bottles and strap on your hiking shoes as you prepare to discover the natural beauty of Cedar Falls.

Sun and Snowfall in Cedar Falls

Balmy and usually sunny, summer days averaging 84 degrees make it an opportune time to paddle a canoe or kayak on the Cedar River or splash in a local water park. Temperatures cool down to the 70s in September and October, beckoning you to get out and see autumn foliage. If you visit during the winter, prepare for snow and cold weather. Lows go below 10 degrees, and the 31 inches of snowfall is a few feet more than you'll find in most other parts of the country.

Downtown Entertainment

In Cedar Falls' historic downtown, you'll find interesting eateries and niche shops specializing in everything from purses to popcorn. On Saturday mornings, from spring through autumn, visit the Farmers Market at Overman Park. Watch the Cedar Falls Community Theater in the 100-year-old Oster Regent Theater or explore the area's history at the circular Ice House Museum or the Victorian Home and Carriage House Museum. Get out and enjoy nature at the riverside parks, trails and lakes in the city. Want even more? Head to adjacent Waterloo for more water parks, science museums and a botanic garden.

Cedar Falls Industries

Celebrate the city's agricultural heritage by visiting one of several farmers markets that take place weekly from spring through autumn. Today's economy centers around the university, which employs roughly 2,000 locals. You'll also find a significant number of manufacturing, distribution and corporate offices in the city, including the headquarters of one of the state's top 20 companies, CBE Companies. It employs around 800 people in the financial services industry, providing services such as debt collection and customer service.

Getting Around in Cedar Falls

You won't be able to fly directly into Cedar Falls, and train tracks that once ran into the city are now part of the bike trails. The best way to get to and around Cedar Falls is by car. You won't find anywhere to rent a car in the city itself, so arrange for pickup at the Cedar Rapids airport when you fly in. The city lacks bus depots and bicycle rentals, but you'll be able to get a kayak, canoe or inner tube to explore the Cedar River as it runs through the city.
