The namesake of Hammond is also its founder – Swedish immigrant Peter Hammond settled here in 1830. He established a tree plantation, from which he made products for the New Orleans maritime industry. When the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad came through the area in 1854, the flag station just a block away from the current train depot was called “Hammond’s Crossing.” Peter Hammond was so convinced that the railroad would bring people and commerce to the community that he signed a contract with the rail company that forced the trains to stop every time they passed through! A hardy variety of strawberries was developed here in the 1890s; this crop was shipped throughout the nation, brought more prosperity to the city, and earned Hammond the title of “Strawberry Capital of America!” Visitors to Hammond today have their choice of numerous interesting and fun activities to enjoy.
