An initial settlement here in 1887 named Demmersville was quickly abandoned when the Great Northern Railway chose a different Montana city through which to lay its tracks. Subsequently, however, businessman and banker Charles Edward Conrad formed the Kalispell Townsite Company with three associates and began selling lots in 1891. The first railroad car pulled into town on New Year’s Day, 1892 amidst a huge celebration. That celebration included the nailing of a silver stake into the center tie of the tracks – that stake was created from melted silver coins that had been donated by town residents. The town’s name is a Salish (Native American) word meaning “flat land above the lake.” The city is the county seat of Flathead County. Kalispell today is a thriving city that offers visitors endless opportunities for fun and adventure.
