Radio City Music Hall opened to the public in 1932 with its cavernous hall and an extravagant stage show. But, in 1933 it was converted to a more familiar feature-film design, and the “film plus stage” format continued with four daily performances until 1979. A major renovation to the 5,933-seat Art Deco theater was completed in 1980.
The public areas of the Music Hall feature artworks by many Depression-era artists, from murals to aluminum sculptures and more. Both a piece of art and an incredible musical instrument, the “Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ is the largest theater pipe organ built for a movie theater; originally installed in 1932 and completely rebuilt in 1999, the organ contains 4,410 pipes.

Many special events—from movie premieres to feature runs—take place at the hall, but the focus throughout the year is on concerts and live stage shows, culminating with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. This annual Christmas stage musical has been a tradition since 1933, featuring the Rockettes precision dance team and, of course, Santa Claus. The Rockettes perform five shows a day, seven days a week during the Christmas season.
A wide variety of awards shows have taken place at the hall, including the Grammy Awards, the Tony Awards, the Daytime Emmy Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards. Since 2013, the only major televised ceremony is the Tony Awards.
