A STADIUM WORTHY OF A LEGENDARY TEAM
Also known as “The House That Harley Built”—in honor of Charles “Chic” Harley, the Buckeyes’ first three-time All-American in 1916, 1917 and 1919—the stadium also served as home for the OSU track and field teams from 1923 to 2001. It’s the largest stadium by capacity in Ohio, the third-largest football venue in the United States, and the fourth-largest non-racing stadium in the world. The stadium even made the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Hotels near Ohio Stadium enable fans to stay close to this legendary facility.
Construction began in 1921, and the stadium—which cost $1.3 million to build—opened in 1922 with a seating capacity of 66,210. At the time, it was the largest poured concrete structure in the world. Ohio Stadium was expanded in 1948, 1991, 2001 and 2014. A major renovation in 2000-2001 cost more than $190 million. Over the years, expansions have grown the official capacity to more than 104,000.
Since the stadium’s opening game against Ohio Wesleyan on October 7, 1922, more than 36 million fans have been in attendance at the venue. The largest crowd in stadium history was on November 26, 2016, when 110,045 fans saw OSU (ranked #2 at the time) beat conference rival Michigan (ranked #3) by a score of 30-27 in double overtime.
Ohio Stadium also serves as a concert venue and has hosted music legends including U2, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Metallica. In addition, the university’s spring commencement ceremonies take place at the stadium every May.
