Guthrie was founded in 1889. When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Guthrie was the first state capital before the seat of government moved to Oklahoma City in 1910. Much of the city’s Victorian architecture has been preserved – providing the perfect backdrop for entertainment related to that era, including horse-drawn carriage rides, trolley tours and Wild West reenactments (an organization called the Guthrie Gunfighters Club performs Old West and Victorian reenactments. You can check the group’s website to find out more details about their performances).
To learn even more about the city’s history, take a trip to the Oklahoma Territorial Museum & The Carnegie Library. Did you know downtown Guthrie is one of the largest Historic Preservation Districts in the country? Most of the buildings were constructed between 1889 and 1910. This includes the famous Blue Bell Saloon in downtown. Opened in the 1890s, it’s the state’s oldest saloon and the place where the actor Tom Mix worked as a bartender before becoming a star in western films. Downtown Guthrie is also where you’ll find unique shops, galleries and restaurants. So, take some time to walk around and explore this historic community! When staying at one of our Guthrie hotels, you’ll have a great place to relax and unwind after a fun day of sightseeing and learning about Oklahoma’s history.
