A TRULY AUTHENTIC—AND PEACEFUL—EXPERIENCE
Peace. Harmony. Tranquility. A connection between human beings and nature. These are the intended effects of all Japanese gardens, as well as the authentic experience you find at the Portland Japanese Garden. This Portland landmark includes five sub-gardens: The Strolling Pond Garden, which is the largest, including a 100-year-old pagoda lantern and a variety of ornate bridges; The Natural Garden, which has multiple ponds, waterfalls and streams; The Sand and Stone Garden, which contains weathered stones in rippled sand that inspire thoughts of the ocean; The Flat Garden, with an urban garden design that contrasts with the park’s contoured shapes; and The Tea Garden, which includes two areas, both devoted to the ages-old tea ceremony that takes place in the authentic tea house. It usually takes about an hour to walk through all five gardens. If you want to spend more time, or visit different sub-gardens on different days, consider staying at one of the Portland Japanese Garden hotels.
The Japanese-style Garden Pavilion was built in 1980 by local builders and currently serves as the center of several Japanese cultural festivals, art exhibitions and other events.
Throughout Washington Park visitors have a wide selection of attractions to choose from, including the Washington Park Amphitheater, the International Rose Test Garden, the Oregon Zoo, and the Portland Children’s Museum. Downtown Portland is also close by and sits along the scenic Willamette River.
