Founded in 1784 by German settler Ludwig Derr, this community was originally named “Derrstown.” After Derr’s death, however, its name was changed to Lewisburg – Lewis being the Anglicized version of “Ludwig” and “burg” the German word for a borough, or hamlet. It was incorporated as a borough in 1812, and it is the county seat of Union County. Lewisburg offers a wide array of fun and interesting activities to its visitors. History buffs in particular will enjoy exploring its 19th-century downtown, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered to be one of the best-preserved 19th-century communities in the nation! There are 646 buildings that were built between 1773 and 1910, and they represent an outstanding variety of architectural styles, including Federal, Queen Anne, Tuscan Villa, Italianate, Gothic, Greek Revival, Georgian, English Manor, and Colonial Revival.
