The hillside home, also known as the Kauffman residence was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935. Edgar Kauffman, a Pittsburgh businessman and President of Kauffman’s department stores owned the residence until his son Edgar Kauffman jr . donated the property to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963. A year later in 1964, the home was opened to the public as a museum that hosts more than 150,000 visitors a year. Built in the small town of Bear Run, the house sits on naturally occurring waterfalls and a watershed created by the Appalachian Mountains.
Due to its geographical location, this mountain retreat posed certain architectural challenges during its construction which earned the house the title of, “Best All-time Work of American Architecture,” by the American Institute of Architecture in 1991. After getting to the house through the woods, you can tour the home, cross bridges to multiple forest entries, view the cantilevered terrace that mirror the boulders in the creek, and eye the original Frank Lloyd Wright built furniture.
