Goodyear was founded in 1917, when Paul Litchfield of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company purchased 16,000 acres in the area. The land was used by the company to grow cotton for vehicle tire threads. The town of Goodyear was incorporated in November of 1946 – at the time, it consisted of 151 homes, 250 apartments, a gas station, a barber shop, a beauty shop, and a grocery store. The town became a city in 1985, and this suburban community is one of the fastest-growing cities in the entire state of Arizona. The population of Goodyear jumped from just over 21,000 in 2000 to more than 70,000 in 2014. Located in the southwest portion of metropolitan Phoenix, the city features more than 188 square miles of plains, rivers, and the gorgeous Estrella Mountains.
