Get to Know Dillon

Prep for Your Dillon Visit
After a day of hitting the powder, make a pit stop in Dillon for some fun in Colorado’s well-kept secret. The serene and scenic mountain village of Dillon sits on the shores of its namesake lake, Lake Dillon. It’s just a short distance from hiking trails and famed Summit County ski areas like Copper Mountain, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin and Breckenridge, yet the small town is quiet and peaceful.

Cool Breezes and Cold Winters

If you hate humidity, you'll love Dillon. In July, the area's hottest month, the average high temperature is just 74. You can generally expect temperatures in the 60s during summer, the 30s through 50s in spring and fall, and down to lows in the 10s and 20s during winter. There is good reason that outdoor enthusiasts flock to Dillon—the area gets little rain, but winter comes with tons of fresh powder; the town gets an average of 130 inches of snow each year.

Kayaking, Climbing and Casting

Dillon is a paradise for outdoor junkies. In the summer, you can fish, boat or kayak on Lake Dillon, hike in the mountains and take in a concert at the Lake Dillon Amphitheatre. With 26 miles of shoreline, the lake is perfect for sailing, boating, walking and picnicking. Once the cold weather comes, you can choose from a variety of winter sports or try them all. In town, you can go ice skating, ice fishing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Dillon is also just a 30-minute drive to various resorts where you can ski and snowboard. Give your muscles a rest and take in a show at the Lake Dillon Theatre Company or book one of the many fascinating area tours led by the Summit Historical Society.

Dollars in Dillon

Feel proud of spending your hard-earned cash in Dillon—you're contributing to the area's major industry, tourism. Dillon itself is too small to release employment data, but in Summit County—which includes Dillon, Breckenridge and a few other nearby towns—about 25 percent of the money comes in from out-of-town travelers. Accommodation, food, retail and construction are the main industries in this city and that of surrounding cities.

Climb Every Mountain (Road)

Once you make it to Dillon, everything else will feel a thousand miles away. And because it's so isolated, getting there takes time. You can drive from Denver—the trip takes close to two hours. You can fly into the Eagle County Regional Airport, about 65 miles west of Dillon in Gypsum. From there, rent a car or take a shuttle. Many transportation companies operate out of the airport, but they don't all go to Dillon, so you may find it easiest to take a shuttle to Breckenridge and then take Summit Stage—a free public bus system—into Dillon. The town itself is small and easily walkable.
