While much of Atlanta will be watching the ever-popular Peach Drop, you and your friends can be seated comfortably aboard a ride through the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. You can listen to live entertainment and enjoy food, party favors, and a glass of bubbly to toast in the new year. Or, if New Year’s events that drop odd items like buzzards, gold nuggets and shamrocks are still your game, Georgia has you covered: Just about an hour away from Blue Ridge, you can celebrate the new year in German fashion with the “Dropping of the Edelweiss” event at Helen Festhalle, featuring food, music, dancing and the dropping of a large painted flower at midnight.

While Flagstaff may be famous for dropping a giant pine cone for New Year’s, there’s plenty more to do for New Year’s Eve in Arizona. For example, the annual Flannel Ball New Year’s Eve Party and Art Show in Downtown Phoenix features plenty of beer, live music, art, food trucks, lawn games and a piñata drop (although it likely doesn’t hold candy). Don your warmest flannel to blend in at this laid-back event in the Roosevelt Row Arts District—plus, early admission is only a few bucks.

If you’re looking for a kid-friendly New Year’s Eve option earlier in the day, check out Noon Year’s Eve—featuring 30 tons of snow and snowball target practice—at the Phoenix Zoo. Young ones can delight in games, bounce houses and music until the stroke of noon, when the coming new year is celebrated with a cider toast.

They don’t call Las Vegas “Sin City” for nothing. The famed desert oasis of casino hotels is also home to the National Museum of Organized Crime & Law Enforcement, or “The Mob Museum,” a restored former courthouse from 1933 that holds a New Year’s Eve celebration each year. Exhibits featuring one-of-a-kind mob and law enforcement artifacts tell the histories of organized crime in America and around the world. You can use the special password “Get zozzled!” at the side door to the museum’s basement bar, the Speakeasy, which replicates the Prohibition Era. Order a scandalous moonshine toast to ring in the new year. How’s that for the perfect New Year’s Eve getaway?

5. Experience the true magic of a Niagara Falls New Year’s Eve

For a fun alternative on your unique New Year’s trip, you can count down the ball drop at the annual Comedy Cellar New Year’s Eve event with numerous stand-up veterans at one of four shows in two locations.

For a romantic but unusual New Year’s evening under the lights of the New York skyline, also check out the city’s only rooftop ice skating rink, Winterland Rink, at The Rooftop at Pier 17. The iconic Brooklyn Bridge stretches just above this historic food, shopping and cultural center along the East River.
