A town in Dare County that is part of what is known as North Carolina's Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk was established in the early 18th century as Chickahawk. Yet from the 20th century onward it will be best known as where the Wright brothers of Dayton, Ohio, conducted their glider experiments over a three-year period prior to making the first controlled powered airplane flights at the Kill Devil Hills, four miles south of the town in 1903. Stop off at the Aycock Brown Welcome Center and you can see The Monument to a Century of Flight which recognizes significant accomplishments and milestones in aviation history while honors the soaring spirit of the men and women who built on the miracle of the Wright Brother's First Flight!
The Kitty Hawk Life-Saving Station, which in 1875 included a US Weather Station, was a big incentive to the Wright Brothers to conduct their experiments in Kitty Hawk, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Not everything in town bearing the name of Kitty Hawk has to do with Orville and Wilbur. There’s the Kitty Hawk Maritime Forest which you can take a Kitty Hawk Kayaks, a two-hour guided tour that’s made for novice paddlers and is perfect for families. Experience Outer Banks golfing at Sea Scape Links Golf Course a challenging course for advanced players and Duck Woods Country Club, situated on a 250-plus acre tract of land and designed by famed architect Ellis Maples.
