Originally a wide-open prairie, the land that Katy is situated on was once the feeding grounds of large buffalo herds and flocks of wild birds; home to deer, longhorn cattle, and wolves; and the hunting ground of Native Americans, the Karankawa tribe. In the mid-1800s, the earliest settlers called their community Cane Island, named for the creek that runs through the area. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT, nicknamed “The Katy”) began operations through the community in 1895, the same year that James Oliver Thomas laid out and platted a townsite. In January of 1896, in appreciation for the presumed prosperity that the railroad would bring, Thomas named his new town after the railroad. The original MKT Depot has been restored, and it is a great place for visitors to go soon after they arrive in Katy, as it serves as the Information & Tourist Center!
